Giving Tuesday: Drought Appeal

We are reaching out to you with an urgent need this Giving Tuesday. Communities across Peru are facing severe challenges due to prolonged drought conditions. In response, Help Peru, in partnership with Minga, will launch a targeted project to provide critical support and training to affected communities.Since 2023, the Amazon region has suffered under a record-breaking drought. Water levels in the Amazon basin have reached historic lows, with river levels dropping by as much as eight centimeters per day. In some areas, previously navigable rivers have turned into dry riverbeds. These unprecedented changes have cut off more than 50 healthcare centers in the Loreto region and severely disrupted access to essential services like healthcare, education, transportation, agriculture, fishing, and clean water.
“For centuries, the Amazon has been home to precious natural resources. We are witnessing the devastation of an essential ecosystem that families rely on, leaving many children without access to adequate food, water, health care, and schools. We must mitigate the effects of extreme climate crises to protect children today and future generations. The health of the Amazon affects the health of us all,” Catherine Russell UNICEF Executive Director.
Help Peru has set up an emergency relief fund for the drought-affected areas. This fund will support a project specifically aimed at addressing drought-related challenges. The project will equip community health promoters and leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to adapt to the changing climate, through hands-on training addressing key challenges, including:Healthcare impacted by extreme temperatures; Water conservation & moisture retention techniques for crop development; andPest control methods to safeguard agricultural productivity.
But we can’t do this alone. Your support is essential for the success of this project. Together, we can empower these communities to adapt, thrive, and build resilience for the future. Will you join us in making a difference this Giving Tuesday?
