INTERNATIONAL Earth Day
April 22, 2024

On International Earth Day, we call on people to reflect and take action to face the climate emergency that we are all facing to a greater or lesser extent: rising temperatures, natural disasters, extreme weather conditions, food and water insecurity, economic disruption, conflicts, and terrorism. The climate crisis increases existing risks and challenges. Droughts in Africa and Latin America directly fuel political unrest and violence. The World Bank estimates that if no action is taken, more than 140 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and South Asia will be forced to migrate within their regions by 2050. Global warming affects everyone’s food and water security. However, food security becomes even more precarious for the poorest and most vulnerable populations. Some 500 million people live in areas affected by erosion, while up to 30% of food is lost or wasted. Likewise, climate change limits the availability and quality of water for human consumption and agriculture.

Climate change intensifies competition for resources such as land, food, and water, exacerbating socioeconomic tensions and, increasingly, causing mass displacement. Thus, climate action is also urgent to ensure peace and security in the world. There are scalable solutions like those we promote at Help Peru to ensure a green future that ensures community prosperity and security. Peru is one of the most mega-diverse countries on the planet and the eighth country in the world in the number of species. From schools, families, civil society, and governments, we have been ensuring environmental education and actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

“The Children’s Land is their refuge; it is a space that welcomes them as their mother and accompanies them. If they fall, there is a lush grass that shelters them; if they need a hug, there are trees to hug; if they need to feel accompanied, many birds visit them and cheer them up with their songs. For our children,  this experience has been enriching; they are getting to know and take care of the plants and animals that live in the garden, and they have developed love and awareness for the care of nature. It has also been a space for emotional containment.”- Fiorella Briollo, Early Childhood Teacher, Care Center for Vulnerable and Neglected Children and Adolescents.
