SPDA-Conservamos por Naturaleza, an initiative of the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law: Strengthening private and community conservation in Peru project
Conservamos por Naturaleza was established in 2012 to provide support to voluntary conservation initiatives and to involve more people in strategic actions to contribute to the care of nature. To respond to the threat of deforestation and forest loss, Help Peru supports Conservamos por Naturaleza to work with local populations to create participatory conservation plans in collaboration with local municipalities. The project enhances private and communal conservation strategies in the Amazon region, through the restoration of degraded areas by reforesting with native forest species and encouraging sustainable productive and tourism activities, in order to strengthen the local economy and promote biodiversity conservation in the region.
The project is implemented in the Valley of the Waterfalls, where the Gocta and Yumbilla waterfalls are located, one of the largest natural tourist attractions in the region, also located within the Tropical Andes Hotspot, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. The project works with 500 inhabitants and indirectly impacts more than 12,600 people living in this region of Amazon.
